Education in Costa Rica is free and compulsory by law. The literacy rate in Costa Rica is 96% (CIA World Fact Book, February 2007), one of the highest in Latin America. Both primary and secondary schools are found in virtually every community.

    

Elementary Education [edit source code]
Primary education is divided into six series. It covers all the basic knowledge in mathematics, social studies, language (Spanish), and sciences, as well as other minor topics such as music, religion, health, and arts.

Secondary Education [edit source code]
There are only a few schools in Costa Rica that go up to grade 12. Schools that finish in 11th grade Costa Rican Bachillerato issue a Diploma accredited by the Ministry of Education. Schools ending in grade 12 or offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma, accredited by the IBO in Geneva, Switzerland, USA or High School Diploma, credited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
